PFOS/PFOA Issues. Is your home tap water and pans safe?

【Ministry of the Environment to issue guidelines this summer on PFAS countermeasures, including concerns about health hazards and carcinogenic effects.】

・The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) will compile guidelines this summer on how to deal with the health hazardous chemical substance “organo-fluorine compounds (PFAS)”.

In a survey of rivers and groundwater conducted in 31 prefectures in Japan, concentrations exceeding the provisional target values were detected at 81 points in 13 prefectures

・PFAS has water- and oil-repellent properties and was once used in a wide range of household products, including surface treatments for frying pans. However, research in Europe, the U.S., and other countries has indicated that PFOS and PFOA may increase the risk of carcinogenicity, such as kidney cancer, and the government has banned the manufacture, import, and use of PFOS and PFOA in products by 2021.

These are the quotes from the article.

PFOS, PFOA, I want to prevent the harm that can be prevented.

PFOS、PFOA.

I was aware of the water quality problems in Tama and other areas, but I recently learned that the same toxic substances were used in frying pans.

I wonder how much this issue is being reported on TV and other media? I think we should make people more aware of it.

Tama area near a U.S. military base. Osaka area near a certain factory. The standard values are amazing. (I don’t know how much of a causal relationship is known)

By the way, I drink Tokyo tap water daily through a water purifier called Cleansui.

It is just a recent pris release. According to this, Cleansui water purifiers can remove more than 80% of PFOS and PFOA. At least, that’s a relief. (Although my house is not in a PFOS or PFOA contaminated area to begin with…)

The other thing that caught my attention was the frying pan.

According to the article above, PFOS and PFOA will be banned from manufacture, import, and use in products by 2021, but could pans made before then be dangerous? It also means that pans made before that date may be dangerous.

By the way, I use an Evercook frying pan myself,

According to this site, it is safe to use as long as you follow the temperature setting. (It appears to be a PFOA/PFOS free frying pan)

There seems to be a variety of fluorine compounds, so it does not seem that fluorinated pans = harmful.

These are my own personal research on water purifiers and frying pans for each of us.

Viruses, bacteria, chemicals, etc., we are always exposed to some kind of risk or harm in our lives, and I think we have to accept these risks to some extent. However, I would like to prevent the harm that can be prevented.

See you then.

If you are cooking to get nourished and energized, but the frying pan or water is harmful to you, that would be very disappointing.
